The Grand Blue Project of Edi Frommenwiler

Administrator’s note: Swiss born and world educated, Edi Frommenwiler is the real deal!  He is one of the first pioneers of Indonesian diving.  In 1992 he built the MV Pindito, Indonesia’s first liveaboard. Shortly after Pindito was launched he visited Papua (Raja Ampat) for the first time.  He’s been exploring and filming there ever since.  Realizing Raja was indeed special, he contacted a number of marine scientists friends, including Dr. Gerald Allen, the worlds’ leading tropical marine ichthyologist.  In 2002 Edi, aboard the Pindito along with Dr. Allen and his marine scientist “buddies”, conducted the first assessment survey of the area. This survey established Raja Ampat as the world’s most bio-diverse marine environment; leading to the area being protected and designated as the Bird’s Head Seascape (2004).  We owe a lot to Edi!

Edi’s film work covers not only Raja Ampat and the entirety of the Bird’s Head Seascape, but the rest of Indonesia’s waters as well.  There’s likely no area in Indonesia’s vast archipelago Edi hasn’t dived.  (And yes I’m envious!)  Now, after years of work, he has compiled his footage into one grand enterprise…The Grand Blue Project.

Despite the fact that the BHS is noncommercial, we believe the GBP, which requires a subscription, is a singular and important resource for anyone interested in the region or Indo Pacific marine life in general.

I will let Edi and his team introduce you.  You are in for a treat!
