Announcing: Elasmobranch Institute of Indonesia/Yayasan Cendekiawan Hiu Pari Indonesia
Guiding the Future of Elasmobranch Conservation in Indonesia…and beyond
Elasmobranch Institute Indonesia (EI) — known in Indonesia as Yayasan Cendekiawan Hiu Pari Indonesia — is a non-profit organization that is passionate about protecting Indonesia’s sharks, rays, and their ocean habitats. As a non-profit organization, their mission is to lead research, promote conservation, and support sustainable management for these incredible marine species. EI strives to protect marine life, conduct groundbreaking research, and empower communities to lead conservation efforts.
Why They Exist –
Filling the Gaps in Shark and Ray Conservation
Conservation efforts in Indonesia have largely concentrated on high-profile areas, where funding and research are more abundant. While this work is important, it often leaves out smaller and remote regions, areas that are home to lesser-known shark and ray populations. At the Elasmobranch Institute (EI), the mission is to shift the focus to these overlooked places, where they can uncover hidden ecosystems and populations that haven’t been studied. Their approach goes beyond just collecting data; they actively engage with local communities and empower indigenous youth to play an active role in conservation.
Why should we care about overlooked shark populations?
Sharks play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems, but many of their populations are often overlooked in conservation efforts. Indonesia is home to many species that are under-studied, especially in remote regions. These sharks are vital to local ecosystems, yet their survival is threatened by overfishing, habitat loss, and lack of attention in conservation planning.
Current Projects
Include programs in Derawan Islands, Raja Ampat Islands (Bird’s Head Seascape) and the Banda Islands.
Meet the Team behind EI
They’re a passionate crew of marine enthusiasts (scientists, conservationists, community builders, and youth advocates) all dedicated to protecting Indonesia’s sharks, rays, and vibrant ocean life!
