Announcing: REEF GUARDIAN our newest BHS Partner
We are delighted to announce the addition of Reef Guardian to the BHS family as its newest Partner.
Reef Guardian promotes the safeguarding of marine flora and fauna on tropical reefs, focusing its activities on Indonesia. The non-profit association, founded in 2020, is based in Leipzig, Germany. Through environmental education in the local communities, the association aims to advance the understanding and ecological importance of tropical coral reefs while initiating projects to conserve and improve the condition of reefs.
Since 2021 the association collaborates closely with the Forum Intelektual Suka Ma’ya (FISM) based in Waisai, Waigeo. The partnership is rooted in the belief that efforts to protect Raja Ampat’s coral reefs should mutually benefit local communities to ensure their enduring support. Funding and donations collected by Reef Guardian finance FISM activities to support indigenous communities on Waigeo and Batanta islands in the making and marketing of sustainable local products. Their sale reduces the dependence of local village people on tourism and generates additional resources for local coral reef protection efforts.
In the longer term, Reef Guardian aims to raise awareness among budget travelers visiting Raja Ampat regarding their environmental footprint by helping them transition from the use of traditional cosmetics to more biodegradable ones made locally. Furthermore the association promotes the ban of reef-toxic sunscreen in Raja Ampat.
We welcome Reef Guardian and its dedicated staff and command them in their efforts of making Raja and its coral reefs a better place for locals, visitors and the entire planet. Join them in their endeavors, Reef Guardian.
