Birds Head Seascape Success Recognised!
In a fitting way to end a productive year in the West Papua Bird’s Head Seascape (BHS), we’re pleased to share some good news! In the recent Coral Triangle Initiative Officials Meeting, the BHS MPA network was recognised by the CTI as a regional success story, among the Coral Triangle’s very best. And the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries recognized BHS’s achievements through it’s annual award ceremony. Raja Ampat Regency’s Marine Protected Area (MPA) system was declared ‘Indonesia’s favorite MPA’, while Kaimana (Triton Bay) Regency’s MPA patrol team was recognized in a category for the ‘best community patrol system’. The Ministry’s awards are held annually as a way to promote better management across Indonesia’s 17million hectares of marine protected area, and celebrate the nation’s many local conservation achievements.
This latest recognition is testament to the hard work of the Birds Head team. Well done to all involved – a great achievement!
